Celebrating Examination Success - 21.12.2011

Two of our members, Andreas Polydorides and Pavlos Stavrinides, attempted with the uttermost success the Ministry of Communication and Works examination for the Harmonised Amateur Radio Examination Certificate (HAREC). This was certainly something to celebrate, in 5B4ES style!
All the members gathered at the club house for the traditional "souvlaki" and spending some quality Amateur Radio time.
We would like to express our gratitude for everybody who contributed in the event.

CQWW DX Contest - 29&30.10.2011

The time for the biggest contest in the year came once again and along with it another epic failure. However the gains of us failing the contest were great. On this occasion the contest was used for the new members to acquire contest experience.
At first they observed 5B4AIP working and then they also tried. They ofcourse faced difficulties as contest conditions, and especially during the CQWW DX Contest, are much different compared to normal everyday conditions. Nevertheless, as time progressed Paul, Constantine, Emilios, Stelios and the other guys all became more and more efficient.
Let us therefore hope that indeed they did not only gain more experience during this weekend but also consolidated some knowledge delivered during lectures. Hence they will hopefully after a couple of contests be able to contribute significantly at contest scores.

JOTA Event - 15.10.2011

Once again, 5B4ES did its best to promote the hobby of Amateur Radio. As in every year since 2009, on the international day of the "Jamboree on the Air", 5B4ES operator 5B4AIP gave a lecture to the scouts of the 82nd Scouts Group of Cyprus, in the club's shack, about this wonderful hobby.
This year 5B4AIP was assisted by rwo young 5B4ES members, Aimilios and Pavlos. Togeather, the explained to the scouts what Amateur Radio involves. The lecture, which was throughout characterised by a friendly atmosphere, ended with a few QSOs on the HF bands. There the scouts had the opportunity to bserve and apply what they had learned as well as converse with scouts in other countries.

Visit by RT9T - 15.09.2011

To our great delight, during his visit in Cyprus Anton RT9T (ex-RX9TL) requested for a visit at 5B4ES QTH. With great pleasure we accepted his request for a visit, which took place on the 8th of September.
5B4ES current chairman 5B4AIP toored Anton in the shack and along with 5B4AFM, ex member and chairman of 5B4ES, speaked briefly to Anton about the history of the club.
Then, in true amateur spirit Anton proceeded to make a few CW QSOs before his departure.
His visit was a great honour for us and we do hope to see him again in Cyprus.

WAEDC - 10&11.09.2011

The Academic Year commenced once again and finally all the 5B4ES operators were back in town. Inspired by the very good score of 5B4AIP as 5B4ES in the All Asian DX SSB Contest of the previous weekend, they were all eager for a multy single entry. WAEDC was coming up and there it was; the P39P group aimed for first place in Asia and nothing elsel. However fortune was not on our side.
On the final check before the contest our Kenwood TL-922 Linear Amplifier refused to switch on! The problem unfortunately did not involve any fuses and we had to wait for the coming week to send the amplifier to an expert for repair. We were all heartrendered. We could see each others dissapointment all over our faces. From first place in Asia we could now aim merely for first place in Cyprus only.
Nevertheless the contest run well with no further obstacles. 5B4AKX and 5B4AIP carried out the operating task whilst 5B4AKZ and Soteris confined themselves to psychological support. Despite our misfortune with the amplifier, we were satisfied at the end of the contest as we did quite well considering that we were running on 100W.
We now can do nothing more than wait for the next contest, and repair our amplifier of course!

1st Form Induction Day - 08.09.2011

After the success of last year's 1st Form's Induction day, 5B4ES again included the club in the students tour of the school. Thus the new students were able to meet the club and find out about its activities after a short talk by 5B4AIP. Hence any students interested knew for sure which club to set as their top priority for joining at their new school...
The day was quite successful as everybody gained something. First formers found out about the English School Radio Club and in this way more about their school whilst the club gained a few new members.

All Asian DX Contest, SSB - 3&4.09.2011

The time for one more contest had come at 5B4ES but coincidence had it so that 5B4AIP only was around to run the contest. When it comes to testing your limits, contesters would first think of CQWW and CQWPX. Ofcourse everything changes when you are merely a seventeen year old student. Although 5B4AIP had two years experience of contesting, it was either as “Multy Operator Multy Band” or “Single Operator Single Band”. Therefore, working the All Asian DX SSB Contest as “Single Operator Multy Band” for 48 hours was quite a challenge for him.
However, the blessing of having 5B4AFM on your side was a major asset. He helped with the preparations of the contest and with his experience and expertise 5B4AIP was as ready as humanly possible. Indeed, it proved to be the experience of a lifetime.
Exchanging age instead of serial number or zone was quite unique. Being a seventeen years old Radio Amateur, one expects to find many other teenagers “on air”. On the contrary, the majority of the people worked aged over forty. Interesting was also trying to guess a person’s age from the sound of his voice. It eventually proved to be impossible.
Concerning the contest conditions no problems were encountered at all apart from something one would really expect to face: not all operators understood the question “How old are you?” or “What is your age?” There were moments that one wished one could speak their native language so that one could communicate properly with them.
In any case, the aftermath of the contest was absolutely positive. Working as “Single Operator Multy Band” in a major contest offers incredible feelings of thrill, excitement and enjoyment. When such a contest ends the only thing in my mind is when will be the next one!
